They flee across the sea, but during a ferocious storm Ygerna is lost and Fergus is washed up on the shores of Dumnonia, a kingdom in the south west of Britannia. He finds sanctuary in a small fishing community where he befriends Nivian, a follower of the Old Ways who lives in the wild depths of the spirit haunted forest and who changes the boy’s destiny forever. But when his enemy once again catches up with him, Nivian is enslaved and Fergus is forced to flee for his life a second time.Consumed with a desire for vengeance, Fergus ends up following the path of the warrior, a course which eventually leads him to befriend and swear fealty to a young Romano British Lord, Ambrosius. He becomes the protector of Ambrosius younger half-brother, Uther Pendragon, a young boy destined to unite the clans of the south, but when Uther is captured by the corrupt High King Vortigern, Fergus and Ambrosius end up travelling the length and breadth of Britannia trying to find him, a quest that will eventually lead Fergus to seek the legendary Sword of Kings. But Fergus also follows his own path, seeking Fiachu mac Niall, the man who drove him from his homeland and who took everything from him.
